Best of Lisbon: Top Ten Things To Do

Hi Friends!

Bringing you the first of many travel posts related to Portugal! If you follow us on Instagram, you know we are head over heels in love with this city. After all we have been back 3 times in one year and definitely do intend to return again! We are kicking off the Portugal travel posts with our Top Ten Things To Do in Lisbon.

1. Walk to Rua Augusta Arch

First things first, to get a taste of Lisbon, you must walk from Rossio Square down to Commerce Square. In doing so, you will walk past the local stores, shops, cafes and people from all walks of life. You will get to take in the beautiful architecture of the parallel streets and as you get closer to Commerce Square, you will see the majestic Rua Augusta Arch. Live performances by street artists are a common sight.

2. Hike Graca Neighborhood

Graca is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lisbon and a hike up the hill its located on will show you why. We were able to truly observe the locals in their element here and the colorful homes against the breathtaking views is the cherry on top. Walk around here to also see the pretty tiles Portugal is so well known for. Plenty of restaurants and cake shops to feed your journey. Graca is also home to one of the famous viewpoints of Lisbon. More on that down below, keep reading!

3. Stroll and Admire Alfama

In an alternate reality, if my friend and I were to ever move to Portugal, this would be the neighborhood we would live in. Alfama offers stunning views, amazing music, friendly people, beautiful streets and the best sunsets. During spring, the streets of Alfama are filled with flowers and exploring them will lead you to plenty of photo opportunities. There are plenty of rooftop places in this area to take in the view of the pastel colored buildings and the Tagus River as well.

Alfama is famous for its rooftop views

4. Explore Castelo de S. Jorge

The Castle was founded in the 11th century and since then it has served multiple purposes. It primarily served as the royal residence, before it was converted to the Portuguese military barracks between the 17th and 18th centuries, and now it serves as a national monument.  This Castle is a prominent landmark in Lisbon and can be spotted from various parts of the city. Besides the impressive architecture, the Castle also offers stunning views of the city of Lisbon.

5. Take a peek at Miradouro (view) Points

Miradouro de Santa Graca is a famous lookout point. There is a church here and an outdoor restaurant. The views are really quite stunning whichever direction you look. This one is crowded due to its reputation. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is another one located in Graca. It is less crowded and does offer pretty great city and sunset views.

Views from near Carmo Convent Church: Get to doors that lead you to the Convent and walk around to where you will see a tiny restaurant located on a rooftop. The views from here are the same you would see from the famous elevator that will charge you $ to take a ride up.

The doors will lead you to the same views as the elevator but this is free.

Miradouro Das Portas Do Soloffers you the best views of Alfama and the castle. It’s a view that will leave an impression on you! It certainly did for us.

Can you spot the castle in this picture?

6. Catch a break at Cais do Sodre

If you are not exactly sure what you are craving, then visit Time Out Market in Cais do Sodre. They have a variety of options to choose from and are known for their delicious food, amazing drinks and scrumptious desserts. You will find everything from coffee, juice, wine, quick bites to full course meals here.

Time out Market

If there is a portuguese delicacy that should not be missed, it’s Pastel de nata. This creamy custard tart can be found all throughout Lisboa. We would recommend trying this dessert at Manteigaria, which is located at the Time out Market.

These are so yummy.

7. Travel back in time to Jeronimos Monastery

This UNESCO world heritage site is located near the Tagus River in the parish of Belem. The monastery portrays Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline Style architecture. The intricate details of this monastery will leave you spell bound.  Be prepared to take tons of pictures as every angle of this venue is a breathtaking photo. This place gave us game of thrones feels!

This is a great place for photos

8. Line up at Belem Tower

While visiting the Jeronimos Monastery, don’t forget to walk over to the Belem tower which is also a UNESCO world heritage site. This structure was once part of a defense system that protected the Tagus River. The Belem Tower along with Jeronimos Monastery also portrays Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline Style architecture. The line to get inside gets long but the outside also will give you quite the views.

10. Watch the sunset at Tagus River

At the end of Commerce Square, you will find the beautiful Tagus River. Fun Fact, it actually originates from Spain and cuts through Portugal passing by the city of Lisbon. At the end of the day, it is the perfect place to go hang out and watch the sun go down. While you are here, be sure to take in the views of the 25 de Abril bridge that crosses over the river.

Be careful not to touch these structures
