TRAVEL GUIDE: ST. KITTS

The Kind-Hearted Paradise

Hi Friends! Today, I will be sharing a travel guide to St. Kitts! When we left, we had come to know the island as the kind-hearted paradise due to its people and views.

If you don’t know where St. Kitts is (I didn’t either before we decided to look into it), then click here. If you know where it is and you haven’t been, then I hope after reading this post, you will be planning a trip! Before you get started, if you don’t want to read the entire blogpost, check out the highlights for a quick version of the Travel Guide to St. Kitts. If you can’t be bothered to read this post or click through highlights, scroll to the bottom of the post to have everything broken down in one go.

We decided to go to St. Kitts after having our first wedding ceremony and before our second wedding ceremony for our mini-moon (extra? sure why not). I think it was the best place as the island offered a little bit of everything.

Day 1

We spent the first day taking in our beautiful resort (more about that below in the section: Where to Stay). and the VIEWS from our room. We ended up having breakfast on site as it’s farm to table kind of place and then embarked on exploring the island!

Renting a car is definitely recommended if you don’t want to do the shuttles around St. Kitts. IMO, they can get crowded and you are obligated to other peoples schedule. I can see that being an option for a short layover but if you are spending some time here, then definitely rent a car. We got ours from Bullseye Car Rental Company.

First up was Reggae Beach Bar, which conveniently is also where we were going to meet our Buggy Tour Operators.

You MUST do the Buggy tour of St. Kitts. The operators were very friendly and knowledgeable. The buggies are not hard to maneuver once you get used to it and the places you will come across are NOT your typical touristy stops. Expect some major insight into the island from a local’s perspective. It is quite an adrenaline rush as well! Heads up, wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty in.

Day 2

The second day consisted of driving around the island (our cottage was on the side where the mountains are on the island). Even if you decide not to stay on the country side of the island, you have got to drive around to this part. I promise you, the views and peek at the local culture will not disappoint.

Make sure you visit the Brimstone Hill Fortress, which is a UNESCO heritage site in St. Kitts. It is a great way to take a dive into the tug of war the island went through with the British and the French and the effect it had on the Kittians.

While you are on this side of the island, stop by their “local” bars which are basically grocery stores that sell Carib and have chairs outside to enjoy it! We stopped by this one called Mango Tree which was very close to the Fortress and Romney Manor (an estate and a plantation).

Day 3

This was probably the most exciting/scary/challenging day of the trip! We decided to hike up, Mt. Liamiuga, a dormant volcano. Our farm resort hooked us up with O’Neil Tours who did an absolutely amazing job of taking us up and bringing us back safely. There are no trails up to the crater but O’Neil has been doing this for so long that he can probably climb up the volcano with his eyes closed.

Aside from being the craziest thing I have ever done, it was the most satisfying experience. O’Neill is very knowledgeable and takes frequent breaks, gives you background on the volcano, the people of St. Kitts and insights into the plants that now live on the volcano. Once you get to the top, you jaw will drop, guaranteed. The next day, your body will be sore, guaranteed.

Day 4

Views, Views, Views! That’s all I can say about our 4th day in St. Kitts. We decided to drive from our resort farm all the way to the tip of the other side. In doing so, we came across several places that were deserted and looked like they belonged in a post card.

You must stop at Timothy Hill, Turtle Beach and Majors Bay. Timothy Hill provides sweeping views of the Carribbean sea on one side and the Atlantic ocean on the other.

Turtle beach is deserted so you can take some drinks with you and relax at the abandoned house! Unfortunately, the conditions aren’t the best to get in the water but nearby and not too far of a drive is Majors Bay. This is the perfect beach to get in the water, it isn’t crowded and you can spot Nevis Island right across.

On the way back to Basseterre, pull over to the lookout spot between Salt Plage but before Shipwreck bar, you will find a random trail that leads you to the cliff (be careful and explore at your own risk) where you can sit and watch the sun go down. There really isn’t anything more magical than this!

Where to Stay: Belle Mont Farm

If you are looking to feel like you are living on a bougie farm with amazing views, service, amenities and food, then stay at Belle Mont Farm. It is about 50 mins or so from the city part of St. Kitts but its location in the countryside is what makes it so amazing. You can get upgraded rooms to get a private pool and outdoor patio that opens from your room. Oh and they have open outdoor bathrooms which were pretty awesome! Just beware of the monkeys here (we may or may not have had our car keys stolen by them).

Places to eat at : Shipwreck Bar, Salt Plage, Serendipity, The Mill & Ram’s Food Court (get the dosa from here, you can thank me later).

Few other random tips:

  • USD dollars & Credit Cards are widely accepted
  • Do try Bobsy’s for late night cravings.
  • People drive on the other side of the road, it seems intimidating but it really isn’t
  • Food is higher in price at sit down restaurants. Places like Bobsy’s & Ram’s Food court are great ways to try local cuisine at a great price!
  • The people are extremely kind, genuine and keep it quite real and to the point.
  • Try to watch a cricket game or a football (soccer) game if you can while you are there. We did get to catch a football game and it was quite entertaining.
  • There are ferries that leave from Majors Bay to Nevis Island daily. Check out the schedule and see if you can fit a trip in. This is one thing we did not get time to do.

The place offers all that you need, be open to trying new things and indulging in the Kittian Culture while you are here.

Until next time…
